Ayrton Senna through Joe Honda’s eyes - Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS), Brazil by Emi Jozuka

Ayrton Senna through the eyes of Joe Honda on show as part of May of Photography organised by the Museum of Image and Sound, Brazil

We are grateful to the Museum of Image and Sound, one of Brazil’s leading public art institutions, for presenting 20 photographs from Joe Honda’s Ayrton Senna collection in an exhibition that marks the collection’s debut in Brazil.

Sharing these photographs with Brazilian audiences was particularly meaningful. More than three decades after his death, Senna remains a deeply admired and cherished figure, and it was moving to witness the connection that people continue to feel with him through these images captured by Joe Honda during his career.

This project was first conceived 16 years ago and has stayed with me ever since. Bringing it to Brazil for the first time felt especially meaningful, in a country where Senna’s legacy continues to hold such deep cultural and emotional significance.

A panoramic view of the exhibition space, where curved corner walls and a flowing image layout evoke the rhythm and movement of a racetrack.

This year also marks the 60th anniversary of my late father Joe Honda beginning his career in photography, adding another layer of meaning to the presentation of this work.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to André Sturm, Director of the Museum of Image and Sound and of May of Photography, for his enthusiasm and support of the project, to Senna Brands for their support, to the curatorial team at the Museum of Image and Sound for their collaboration and care throughout the process, and to Guilherme Mariano, the exhibition designer, for his creative care and inspired approach.

The São Paulo Museum of Image and Sound is a public museum of audio-visual works, established in 1970 in São Paulo, Brazil. During May of Photography, one of the city’s most prominent photography seasons, MIS presents a wide programme of national and international exhibitions, alongside gallery talks and workshops across its galleries. The institution has previously showcased works from the estates of Janis Joplin, David Bowie, Tim Burton and Elvis Presley.
